Several years ago I wrote a book about my life (and particularly the time spent in Ethiopia). It is entitled “Have Scalpel will Travel” and may be purchased over the internet on www.havescalpelwilltravel.com

Instead of writing another book I have decided to go back to Ethiopia and again get involved with the people of the country that I love.

Please download and read of more ways that you can Help Us Help! (I have not published the letter directly as it does contain some graphic medical photographs.)

Here is an excerpt from the Letter

I have just been appointed Associate Professor of Surgery with the Arba Minch University in the Southern Zone of Ethiopia. The University has a medical school training 60 students per year besides other medical personnel.

The associated hospital is of fairly good quality but has a serious shortage of equipment
which is needed for both treating patients and teaching our students.

I am writing to ask for financial help in equipping the surgical and anaesthetic departments much better than they are at the moment.

A few statistics, which I think speak for themselves.

  • Hospital beds – In Ethiopia there are 0.24/1000 persons compared with Australia 12.5
  • Physicians – 0.03/1000 compared with Australia 2.5
  • Available potable water – 24% of population only have access to this compared with Australia 100%
  • Infant mortality – 102.12/1000 live births compared with Australia 4.76
  • Life Expectancy- 42 compared with Australia 80
  • The town has about 100,000 people but the hospital there serves about 1.5-2 million population.
